Judo Juniors Judo is an International Sport derived by Dr. Jigaro Kano over 125 years ago from the Japanese Samurai Martial Art of Ju Jitsu. It was accepted as an Olympic Sport in the 1964 when Japan was the host nation. Based on member participation it is actually the second most popular sport in the world; France has over 2 million judoka (judo players). BASICS Judo is a natural form of wrestling devised over 125 years ago by Dr Jigaro Kano. His intention was to take his martial art of Ju Jitsu and make it safe for younger participants to practice and compete. In learning Judo your child will not only learn self defence but will develop fitness, discipline and confidence. This is achieved through not just learning the techniques but by being tested as they try for their next belt or in competition. COMPETITIONS There are several competitions throughout the year open to all levels of Judo player. The Juniors section (Under 16) is divided into age band and certain techniques are banned to greater promote the safety of participants. A sense of fair play prevails at Judo tournaments with players acknowledging defeat with a smile as they know they are about to hit the mat. GENERAL All a child needs to begin is a good attitude, no jewelry, clean hands, feet, neat toe and finger nails and a tracksuit (without hard zips or buckles). A judo suit can be purchased for around €25 (depending on size) only when the child and parent are happy that the sport is for them. The Club is fully affiliated to The Irish Judo Association, and students can be graded to receive Internationally recognised belts. Judo classes are not creches and I expect most, if not all, parents to stay and assist with nosebleeds, tears and trips to the toilet. There is on-street metered parking on Hanover St E (see map) Wild Geese reserve the right to ban any child who is disruptive or is ruining the fun for the rest of the class. CLASS TIMES Tuesdays & Fridays 4-5pm and 5-6pm Sundays 4-5pm COST €20 per month I look forward to meeting the next generation of happy judoka.
