On the way into town the other day a classic Beastie Boys tune came on the car radio. Naturally I turned it up and got an immediate lift in my mood. I found my right foot getting heavy as the chorus came in “because you can’t, you won’t and you don’t stop!”
What an excellent line. Especially for people of our ilk. We are warriors and renaissance men of a modern age, we train to be fit, strong and enduring, to be able to defend ourselves and those around us, to be as I have spoken of before, the Sheepdogs protecting the Sheep from the Wolves.
The Beastie Boys track brought to mind a quality we must develop. Often in these newsletters I talk of strength and give tips on how best to train with weights etc, this time I want to talk not about physical strength but instead mental strength.
You Can't
You can’t stop, if you do you become like everybody else. We train to be exceptional, we push ourselves mentally and physically to become better. In the Taoist mindset they believe in improving oneself in order to become a more useful member of society, French physical culture guru Georges Herbert simplified it to “be strong to be useful.” It doesn’t stop with strength, think how your self defence skills could come into use, maybe you take a more intellectual approach and provide knowledge and expertise.
If you stop, what sets you apart from the crowd?
Can you accept the fact that you could have? Or would rather push on and actually do?
You Won’t
Once you’ve started to push your boundaries, discovered that the outer reaches of comfort is where the greatest rewards lie, you will realise that it’s no longer about wether you can or can’t stop, you’ll simply realise that you won’t stop. You won’t stop until the goal is accomplished, that title is won, form mastered, bar lifted, weight achieved. But will you stop there? No you won’t, you’ll find the next challenge and you’ll continue.
Building the mental fortitude to follow through in a personal goal will help create more positive you. Once a challenge is done, you know that you can rise to an occasion, you triumph over adversary, be that a mugger, those few extra pounds off the waistline or on the bar.
And You Don’t Stop
No, you don’t. Ever.
Once you have reached a goal, look to the next, then the next. Never stop living and learning, take every opportunity to become a better person. You will feel like giving up, but believe me you won’t.
Take the opportunity to help other on the path you have trodden, assist them on the journey to mental strength so that they may also achieve whatever goals they set themselves.
Without mental strength you will never really have the ability to push yourself to achieve the goals that are dear to you.
How do you develop mental strength? The same as you build physical strength, progressively. Set small challenges and gradually increase the difficulty of each subsequent challenge. Keep track of your progress, this is the simplest method of motivation. If you relent, it will show in your log.
Inform friends and family of your ambitions and utilise their support, social support is a huge boost to anybody attempting to grow. Find people who have already done what you want to do and pick their brains. All the instructors at our Wild Geese Academy have walked the walk, if you wish to emulate them, talk to them, we’re more than willing to help out.
Take time out, rest and recuperation is vital, if all you do is push, eventually you will burn out. As an old instructor would say, “make haste slowly”, know when to kick back so that you can restart with renewed vigour.
But don’t ever stop. Failure is not an option.
It gives me great pleasure to be able to announce the very first visit to Ireland of Brazilian Jujitsu master, Marcello C Monteiro.
Attached to this newsletter is a flyer detailing the event, please print it out for your friends or your club.
Marcello will be offering two days of training, one open and one for instructors only.

This has seen him become one of the most in demand instructors in the world today, and awarded the rank of professor from Conselho Regional de Educacao Fisica/Brazil.
By attending the seminar you will learn effective attacking and defensive positions, counters and counters to counters, escapes, submissions, sweeps and set ups that can be used against even the most advanced opponents.

Minimalist Strength Training without bulk or fancy equipment
Power To The People, Russian Strength Training Secrets for Every American
A pretentious title but a truly fantastic book. Goes into great detail on how to perform the Deadlift safely and how to progress to massive amounts of strength without bulking up or wasting hours in the gym. I personally put 20kg’s onto my deadlift in only a few months of using the programme.
Check it out for your self Here: http://tinyurl.com/deadlift
